BIA Legal Update (includes spotlights on BIA report writing, DoLS conditions and BIA wellness)

This new course from Edge is an opportunity for BIAs to take time out to consider the latest DoLS legal developments, BIA ethics and their own wellbeing. DoLS Signatories will also find the content relevant and useful.

The day will be led by Aasya Mughal, director, barrister and co author of The DoLS Handbook. Aasya will deliver a legal update and refresher on BIA ethics and the importance of BIA independence, including the latest on the acid test, following the Supreme Court decision (if available by that date) in A Reference by the Attorney General for Northern Ireland of a devolution issue under paragraph 34 of Schedule 10 to the Northern Ireland Act 1998. 

Aasya will be joined by Piers McNeil, a hugely popular and experienced Edge trainer, independent social worker, BIA and Court of Protection visitor. Piers will guide delegates through a mini BIA report writing session and BIA supervision session, so that delegates will have the opportunity to reflect on their own practice and receive expert guidance. 

In addition, they will be joined by Mohammed Umar (as featured on the BBC, Channel 4 & GQ Magazine), a Transformation Coach and breathing specialist. Umar will talk about the importance of wellbeing while taking on the challenges of the BIA role, the importance of mobility for the older client group in care homes and how this relates to DoLS conditions. Umar will also take the group through practical breathing exercises (optional) that delegates can also use at home, to maintain their wellness, while managing a busy BIA workload or the challenges of managing a DoLS team. 

Note: The day will serve as an annual update/refresher, meeting the requirements of the BIA annual update requirements.
