Are acute NHS Trusts in England ready to assess, pre-authorise and authorise 30,000 cases a year under the Liberty Protection Safeguards?
The latest annual DoLS statistics for England show that there were approximately 30,000 standard DoLS applications* from acute NHS Trusts for the year ending March 2021. Currently local authorities carry out the work of assessing these and authorising them. From April next year under LPS however, NHS Trusts will be solely responsible for undertaking the assessments, pre-authorisation review and authorisation process. DHSC official funding estimates indicate it could take at least 7 hours to assess each LPS.
(*the figures show over 66,375 urgent and standard DoLS applications from acute hospitals. The overall split between these is approximately 55% urgent to 45% standard applications)
