Mental capacity and access to alcohol in care homes

A recent report by the CQC looks at restrictions on access to alcohol in care homes and if this is necessary and proportionate in practice. The report found: ‘There were significant differences in the way that alcohol was made available in care homes. In some homes, alcohol was available every day, for example, through bars within the home or served at mealtimes.’

‘Care homes should manage the use of alcohol primarily through the lens of personalised care and risk-based assessment, with regard to safety, mental capacity and human rights.’
