NHS England has just published a useful resource that considers 8 types of restrictive practice in care settings with links to further guidance for each type of restraint/ restriction. It is helpful for many staff groups to consider in their assessments. It is of particular use for BIAs undertaking DoLS assessments as a framework to identify restrictions that lead to a deprivation of liberty and whether they are proportionate. Although designed for mental health in-patient units the resource applies equally to care homes and supported living placements. In fact many of the restrictions occur more frequently and for longer periods of time in care homes (for example CCTV and chemical restraint). The restrictive practices explained are:
1. Cultural restraint
2. Surveillance
3. Blanket restrictions
4. Mechanical restraint
5. Physical restraint
6. Chemical restraint
7. Psychological restraint
8. Environmental restraint
