CQC prosecutes care home for causing harm to a resident

The CQC has recently taken a Care Home to court for causing a resident avoidable harm. Exeter Magistrates’ Court, found the care home guilty and ordered the care home to pay £68,000.
The incident happened in 2003 when the resident suffered a serious fall during a transfer procedure at the care home. She was bed-bound and fully reliant on two carers, together with a hoist and sling, for all transfers. On the day of the incident staff used equipment consisting of a hoist and scales which were not compatible. The scales detached from the hoist causing the resident to fall from a height of several feet to the floor. As a result of the fall, they sustained significant injuries including broken vertebrae and a broken rib.
