Aims

This full day course aims to familiarise adult health and social care professionals with the Equality Act 2010 and its 9 protected characteristics.


Learning outcomes

  • Improved awareness of the Equality Act 2010 and how it applies to social care.

  • Greater familiarity with the 9 protected characteristics and how this translates into real life and practical examples.

  • To feel confident about how to deal with situations or sensitive topics where differing views may arise in the workplace or with clients.

Programme

The day will be split into 9 different sessions covering each of the 9 protected characteristics, incorporating case studies and Q&A sessions:

  • Age

  • Disability

  • Gender reassignment

  • Marriage and civil partnership

  • Pregnancy and maternity

  • Race

  • Religion or belief

  • Sex

  • Sexual orientation

The course will be delivered by Oscar Davies

Oscar Davies (they/them) is a barrister specialising in discrimination law at Garden Court Chambers. They are frequently in tribunal/court litigating matters pertaining to all protected characteristics. They are recognised as a Tier 1 ‘Rising Star’ in the Legal 500. They have a broad civil practice, in court or tribunal most days, encompassing employment, education, human rights and property. 


Oscar was the first barrister in the UK to be publicly recognised as non-binary and to use the title ‘Mx’ in court, which was championed by the press as a ‘legal first’. In 2024 Oscar was nominated as Young Pro Bono Barrister of the Year (Advocate), LGBTQ+ Champion of the Year (Individual) and DE&I Rising Star of the Year (Legal 500 ESG Awards). They were voted as one of the ‘Top 10 Outstanding Contributors to LGBT+ Life’ by the British LGBT Awards 2022 for their work as an advocate and activist for non-binary rights.
