Solution Focused Practice and the Role of the AMHP 15 October 2025

Aims

This experiential introduction to the core techniques and questions of Solution Focused Practice (SFP) will show participants this way of working, provide opportunities to try it, explore applications to the AMHP role and present video excerpts or real practice for demonstration purposes.  The training is designed to give a basic overview and to help participants to decide whether they would like to pursue further training in the approach.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this course participants will have:

• Developed their understanding of the origin and techniques of Solution Focused Practice

• Practiced Solution Focused questions

• Thought with fellow participants about the application of the techniques and questions to the role of the AMHP

• Obtained sufficient information to decide whether they want to learn more and to undertake further training in SFP

The course will be delivered by Nick Perry

Nick is a registered social worker and has been qualified since 2002. He has been practising as an AMHP continuously since 2007. He has been in a dedicated AMHP and practice educator role for his employing local authority since 2016 and is currently seconded as a practice lead. He is a visiting lecturer and has taught on the Brighton University AMHP training programme since 2020. Nick undertook a foundation training in Systemic Therapy with the Kensington Consultation Centre in 2005; and during the pandemic was able to undertake the BRIEF online certificate in Solution Focused Practice. He went on to complete the Advanced Certificate in 2022 and became accredited by the UK Association for Solution Focused Practice in 2023.

He has published articles on the application of SFP to the AMHP role and is editing a book for Routledge due for publication in 2025 entitled: Solution Focused Practice and Mental Health Crisis: Inclusive Support Towards Safety and Hope.
