Edge director, author and former CQC MCA specialist advisor, Steven Richards, will discuss a variety of the latest DoLS news and developments.

Sara-Jayne Williams: Ombudsman Complaints- Lessons for BIAs and Supervisory Bodies

An Edge trainer and former MCA and DoLS lead professional. Sara-Jayne Williams has a particular interest in analysing Ombudsman Complaints. Throughout this analysis, Sara-Jayne has identified significant errors on the 'basics' of the MCA and DoLS by Supervisory Bodies, DoLS assessors and others. Many of these errors could be easily avoided. Sara-Jayne will talk through some key lessons to help Supervisory Bodies, BIAs and Mental Health Assessors avoid these same errors when undertaking DoLS assessments.

Aasya Mughal: Practice, Procedure and Legal Risk for BIAs, MH Assessors and Signatories

Edge director and author Aasya Mughal will discuss practice issues and the legal risks involved to individual assessors and signatories including the following key topics:

1. Remote assessments (when used due to the supervisory body's resources not because it is in P’s interests).

2. No written evidence of scrutiny on Form 5 (only a signature)

3. Using volunteers to take on role of the representative

4. BIAs, MH Assessors and Signatories: individual legal responsibility, professional registration and the CQC

Jeff Innocent - British Comedian of the Year Winner

A whole day of legal talks can be overwhelming so we like to mix up the day with a quiz/case studies (with prizes!) and some light entertainment after lunch.  This year's after lunch comedy will be provided by the brilliant Jeff Innocent. Jeff has won a number of awards for his comedy including  'British comedian of the year' and 'Comedian's Comedian'. His social media clips have racked up millions of views and his comedy has also been highly reviewed in the press:

“Jeff Innocent delivers a masterclass in stand up comedy every time he performs” The Times

"It should be made law that every British Citizen must go and see Jeff Innocent. He's that funny." Evening Standard

Through his comedy, Jeff will cover a range of topics including getting away from his family's criminal past and how much he has enjoyed living in a diverse East London Borough. His interview with the Guardian is here.
