About the Event
Our June conference in Central London featured a variety of topics and guest speakers carefully selected to be of maximum use to Best Interests Assessors (BIAs), DoLS Mental Health Assessors and other DoLS professionals. The conference also included an element of future LPS planning and preparation. Attendance at the conference served as an annual update to continue in the role of a Best Interests Assessor or Mental Health Assessor under DoLS.

Speakers
Mike O'Brien QC: DoLS Case Law Update and Article 8 ECHR
Mike is a Court of Protection barrister and former MP serving in numerous minesterial posts including Solicitor General and Minister of State for Health in 2009. He was Solicitor General at the time the Mental Capacity Act became law and will share his thoughts on where the Act is today. Mike will also provide a DoLS case law update and consider the impact of Article 8 ECHR on Court of Protection practice, as a safeguard for people lacking mental capacity.
Dr Kapila Sachdev: Assessing Older Person's Mental Health Needs
Kapila is a consultant psychiatrist and will consider some key issues in older person's mental health and in particular, the impact of the pandemic that DoLS professionals need to consider in their assessments.
Petrina Douglas-Hall: Chemical Restraint: Practice Issues for DoLS Assessors
Petrina is an highly experienced mental health pharmacist and will address the use of chemical restraint on people lacking mental capacity to consent to it (and how to reduce it). Petrina cares for her son who has a severe learning disability and autism.
Steven Richards: Liberty Protection Safeguards- are we nearly there yet?
Steven is an Edge director and a former CQC Reviewer. He will cover the Liberty Protection Safeguards, providing an update on progress and an overview of the key changes. Steven co-authors the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Handbook and was invited to deliver training on the Liberty Protection Safeguards to a group of Peers in the House of Lords.
Joe Wells
Joe is a comedian and writer for Have I Got News for You and will provide a short comedy interlude. Joe has toured with Frankie Boyle and Stephen K Amos. Joe became very popular after this set went viral during lock down about his non autistic brother (Joe has autism). The first edition of his book Touch and Go Joe was extremely popular and in 2021, he wrote an updated version covering his teenage years and his experiences of living with OCD
