About the Event

PART 1: 2 June  10:00 to 13.00

PART 2: 4 June  10.00 to 13:00

Aims

The main aim of this course is to develop an understanding of older people’s mental health, including the interaction with health. Many people assess older adults as part of their work but lack an understanding of the person’s mental health and how this may affect the assessment. With scrutiny of mental capacity assessments in all areas of work increasing and the forthcoming Liberty Protection Safeguards, a better understanding of poor mental health in older adults will be vital.

The course is designed for social workers, occupational therapists, nurses, speech and language therapists, care home managers and BIAs who would like to expand their understanding and knowledge of this important subject. In addition, legal professionals practising in the subject areas of the Court of Protection, private client and Mental Health Tribunals will find it very useful.

At the end of the course, delegates will have a better understanding of

  • The interaction between physical and mental health issues when assessing older adults
  • Depression in older adults and how this is different in younger adults
  • The three Ds to be considered when assessing older adults- depression, delirium and dementia
  • The symptoms and possible causes of mental disorder in older people
  • Dementia and behaviours that challenge
  • Issues in relation to age and anti-discriminatory and/or oppressive practice

Note: Those attending need some prior knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Care Act, Mental Capacity Act, and Mental Health Act and understand their general application.

Programme:

  • Depression and how depression in older people differs from younger adults
  • Suicide in older adults
  • Delirium
