On 22 March 2022, The Mental Health Units (Use of Force) Act will come into force. It is better known as Seni’s Law and is named after Olaseni Lewis, who died as a result of being disproportionately restrained while a voluntary inpatient in a mental health unit in south London. The statutory guidance was published on 7th December.
The Act introduces several duties on mental health units such the requirement to record their use of different types of restraint including chemical restraint. The DHSC will produce annual reports on these figures. For further information : https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-law-to-prevent-use-of-force-in-mental-health-settings
