The Mental Health Act – 37 years of discrimination

Newly released figures from the NHS confirm that the Mental Health Act continues to show high levels of discrimination to black and black British groups as well other non-white groups. What is most damning is the fact this has been reported on for 37 years with no significant change. The most recent statistics show that in relation to Community Treatment Orders the situation has deteriorated so that if you are Black or Black British you are 11 times more likely to be put under a CTO than a someone who is White. The statistics are available from the file below and this link.

The authors of the book Working with the Mental Health Act’ have produced an information sheet detailing the 37 years unbroken discrimination in the use of the Mental Health Act that can be downloaded from: www.edgetraining.org.uk
