About the Event
Perinatal Mental Health: Risk assessment and management in the perinatal period
Aims
Mental health problems affect one in four women in the perinatal period requiring effective assessment and management to reduce the risk of adverse outcomes for the mother, her infant and her family.
This course aims to enhance the skills and competencies of practitioners who may have joined Perinatal Mental Health Services within the last year or NHS professionals who wish to reflect and enhance their understanding around risk assessment and management in the perinatal period.
Developed in line with the Perinatal Mental Health Competency Framework, the course will address a range of topics to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to work competently and effectively in the risk assessment and management of women in the perinatal period. The training will be delivered remotely via Zoom over four half days.
Programme
An interactive course, it combines both formal teaching, group work, videos and an opportunity to work through a range of case studies & vignettes enhancing practitioners’ knowledge of risk and discuss practice challenges. This course is a powerful, thought provoking and emotive course combining theory, case law and research with a strong emphasis on mothers and fathers’ lived experiences. This includes the trainer’s own lived experience of severe postnatal illness embedding participants’ understanding of risk in the perinatal period further. The course will support practitioners in understanding the perinatal context in risk assessment and management through:-
- Appreciation of how difference and stigma can create barriers to identification, assessment and management of risk
- Detection of risk with women with no previous history of mental disorder
- Understanding the aetiology, risks, recurrence and complications for mothers with psychotic and non-psychotic illness, their baby and infants in the perinatal period
- Managing confidentiality and considerations for safeguarding in the perinatal period
- Understanding care pathways and the interface with NICE Antenatal & Postnatal Guidance CG192 in the assessment, treatment and management of mental disorders
- Understanding how one’s own emotional responses, socio-cultural, organisational, structural barriers can affect decision making and challenges faced when working across agencies.
- Working systemically - keeping the partner/father and family in mind
- A psychological perspective in working with women in the perinatal period
- Considerations for assessments and care planning for women with severe mental disorder, acute onset of severe perinatal illness or rapidly deteriorating mental state
- Considerations and challenges facing clinicians – interface between Mental Health Act 1983, Mental Capacity Act 2005 and safeguarding
- Working towards recovery
