About the Event

This brand new conference from Edge will discuss the latest statistics, case law, news and practice related to BAME communities in the field of mental capacity and mental health law. The conference will also touch on topical issues related to BAME communities and Covid 19.

Delivered online (via Zoom), relax in the comfort of your own home or office while you hear from a range of expert speakers on key issues affecting BAME communities. Sneha Kilhay, Lecturer & Consultant Trainer

Sneha Khilay has an MSC in Human Resources and is an NLP practitioner and accredited executive coach. She has lectured at Hertfordshire University and Bournemouth University ASW/AMHP programme and is a regular contributor to

the London School of Economics Diversity Section. She has published various articles and writes a monthly newsletter on equality. Sneha has advised the NHS and local authorities on equality and unconscious bias as well as the private and

corporate sectors. Her projects include work with the United Nations and the Home Office. She has recently been interviewed on the BBC Inside Out programme on the impact of bias in recruitment processes.

Steven Richards, MHA Reviewer, Author & Edge Director

Steven Richards is a Director of Edge training and consultancy and has worked in the mental health field for over 20 years. He was a Mental Health Act administrator for many years at the Maudsley Hospital advising clinical staff on their use of the legislation in practice. During this time, he was involved in the publication of the hospital’s guide to the Act, called the Maze. Following this, Steven was an in-patient advocate for Mind working across adult acute and dementia assessment wards. As an advocate he successfully challenged the assessment of mental capacity of a client directly before the Court of Protection.

Steven was a Mental Health Act Reviewer with the Care Quality Commission for over 10 years visiting and reviewing the care and treatment of patients detained under the Act. He also worked with the CQC as a specialist advisor on the Mental Capacity Act and DoLS.

Steven delivers training on both the Mental Capacity Act and Mental Health Act across England and Wales to health and social care professionals. He has experience of training a wide variety of services including local authorities, CCGs, NHS Trusts, Welsh Health Boards, the police, hospices and prison health services. Steven delivers professional legal update courses for DoLS BIAs and Mental Health Assessors and AMHPs under the Mental Health Act. He has spoken at a series of Health Education England conferences on the use of the MCA at the end of life care. Steven was invited by members of the House of Lords to deliver training on the draft Liberty Protection Safeguards bill prior to detailed debate and amendments in the house. 

Michael Etienne, Barrister, No 5 Chambers

Michael is frequently instructed on cases that give rise to issues of systemic discrimination and is a member of the Steering Committees for the Black Barristers Network, the Black Men in Law Network and “Bridging the

Bar”. Michael has a particular focus on actions against the police and other detaining authorities in all of their forms; especially claims involving alleged breaches of the Human Rights Act 1998 and the Equality Act 2010. Michael was a

member of the external legal team, acting for the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) in its project “Following Grenfell”. Michael has also worked at the European Court of Human Rights and is on Liberty’s Policy Council and Executive Board. Sohail Ali, Solicitor, DLA Piper

Sohail Ali is a Director at DLA Piper, a large global law firm. He specialises in  financial and corporate disputes, acting for a range of clients including financial institutions, funds and large corporates. He has a particular interest in Islamic

Finance having advised some of the largest Islamic Finance institutions in the UK and in the Middle East. Sohail read law at St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford where he graduated from in 2005.

Tez Ilyas, Comedian, Actor, Author

Tez is one of the stars of hit sitcom Man Like Mobeen (BBC Three), and has  appeared on Mock the Week (BBC Two), The Last Leg (Channel 4),Live From the BBC (BBC Two), Live from the Comedy Store (Comedy Central), Kevin Hart’s Live

from Montreal (LOL Network), Virtually Famous (E4), The Now Show (BBC Radio 4) and starred in both his own Channel 4 comedy pilot, Bounty (which has become the most watched show in the format’s 10 year history), and fronted his

own satirical entertainment series, The Tez O’Clock Show (Channel 4), to huge critical acclaim. Tez Ilyas hit the ground running. In his first three years as a stand up, he found himself in no less than eight competition finals including the prestigious BBC New Comedy Award and Leicester Mercury New Comedian of the Year. In 2015, Tez  achieved phenomenal success with his debut stand up hour TEZ Talks. A sell out  run at the Soho Theatre and his own BBC Radio 4 series based on the show followed; Tez created three series of the hit radio show and it was used by the BBC as one of its flagship shows for the launch of BBC Sounds. In 2016, his highly anticipated follow up show, Made in Britain, went on to sell out every singleperformance (including extra shows) at the Edinburgh Fringe and gained spectacular critical acclaim, with a smash hit nationwide tour in 2017. Chair: Aasya F Mughal, Barrister, Author & Edge Director

Aasya is a barrister and director of Edge Training & Consultancy Ltd. She has  provided legal representation for individuals and businesses in civil litigation cases and for patients in appeals against their detention under the Mental Health Act.  Aasya also gained considerable experience as an in-patient advocate working with detained patients on a number of mental health wards and also appeared before the Court of Protection in this role. Aasya has volunteered for the human rights organisation Liberty providing legal information and advice to the public on human rights law and also volunteers her time to deliver training to families on the Mental Capacity Act through Edge. Most recently, she provided guidance to charities and members of the  House of Lords on Schedule 8 to the Coronavirus Act 2020 (Mental Health Act amendments) and previously, on the Liberty Protection Safeguards including the drafting of amendments to the Mental Capacity (Amendment) Act 2019.
