Maintaining Human Rights in Care Homes During a Pandemic
Dr Oliver Lewis
Oliver is a barrister at Doughty Street Chambers and a regular trainer on the Edge team. He has been delivering a number of sessions for Edge on maintaining human rights in care homes during this very challenging pandemic. He has regularly been interviewed by the national press on the issue of care home visiting. The changing landscape has meant a need to keep on top of the latest law and guidance. Oliver has a huge expertise in the field of human rights law and counts Mr Stanev (Stanev v Bulgaria 2012 ECHR) as one of his former clients.
Observing the Court of Protection during a Pandemic
Professor Celia Kitzinger
Celia is Co-Director of the Open Justice Court of Protection Project. She has observed over 138 hearings Court of Protection hearings during the pandemic and will share her insights including what professionals are getting right (and wrong!). More generally, Celia will share what the online Court of Protection process has been like and tell our audience how they too, can get involved in the Project so they can see what the (online) Court of Protection experience is really like themselves.
2020-21 DoLS Case Law Update
Aasya F Mughal (Chair)
Aasya is a barrister and director of Edge and will chair the conference. Aasya has been providing guidance to charities and members of the House of Lords on the Liberty Protection Safeguards including the drafting of amendments to the Mental Capacity (Amendment) Bill. Aasya is co-author of the Amazon bestseller The DoLS Handbook and a leading expert in the field of DoLS and LPS. Aasya will provide a case law update covering specially selected DoLS cases from the last year.
Medication as a Form of Restraint
Petrina is a highly experienced pharmacist and will discuss medication used as a form of chemical restraint and what DoLS assessors should be looking out for. There has been evidence published in the Lancet about the increased prescribing of antipsychotic medication for those with Dementia during the pandemic. Petrina’s talk will be particularly useful for BIAs and Mental Health Assessors.

Steven is a director of Edge and a CQC Reviewer. Steven is co-author of the Amazon bestseller The DoLS Handbook and a leading expert on DoLS and the Liberty Protection Safeguards. Steven is independent of the Department of Health and Social Care and his work on challenging the first draft of the Liberty Protection Safeguards led to parliamentarians seeking his guidance on proposed amendments and an invitation to the House of Lords to deliver training on LPS. Steven will provide an overview on where we are now and some of the key changes expected.
